Referral Flow
Gentiva's referral sources for the Home Health and Other Related Services segments tend to be local. They provide referrals for Medicare or Medicaid patients, as well as referrals from local managed care organizations and insurers. These local referrals are generated by a Gentiva sales force that has been deployed strategically around the country. Gentiva's own system of branch offices provides direct services to patients, including home nursing and related services, specialty programs and hospice services.
Industry Environment
Growth Drivers
Gentiva is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for home health and related services expected in the years ahead. The U.S. Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has projected that Medicare enrollment will increase from 39.6 million Americans in 2000 to 76.8 million by 2030. CMS also anticipates national home health expenditures, including durable medical equipment, will rise from more than $82 billion in 2007 to over $155 billion by 2017. The U.S. Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services have estimated that by 2050, the home health industry will require 13 times the half million workers it employed in 2000.
In addition to the aging population, growth in the homecare industry is expected to come from the patient preference for healthcare delivered at home, changing family structures, medical and technological advances, an expanding marketplace for specialized homecare services (such as Gentiva's Specialty programs), increasing physician acceptance of homecare, and the cost advantage of homecare over institutional care. According to estimates prepared by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, costs for a hospital day and a skilled nursing facility day are estimated at more than $3,800 and $490, respectively, while the average homecare visit is just over $100.
Competition
Gentiva is widely regarded as the industry leader because of its range and scope of nationwide services. However, only a very small portion of the home health market is served by public companies. In fact, homecare in the United States is primarily a highly fragmented local business, populated by approximately 13,000 agencies, more than half of which are Medicare-certified. As a result, Gentiva's competition comes primarily from regional and local for-profit and non-profit providers, and from companies with a significant presence in specific industry segments, such as hospice. With the anticipated rise in home health and related spending projected by CMS, the industry offers significant future opportunities for growth and consolidation.
Payers
Gentiva's primary payers are Medicare, Medicaid, state and county programs, managed care organizations and insurance programs.
Gentiva's Strategic Priorities for Growth
-
Strengthen Capacity and Productivity
Gentiva is continually focused on practices driving clinician recruitment and retention. The Company strives to be an employer of choice. Enhance Clinical and Customer Service Excellence
Gentiva, among its numerous patient care initiatives, is implementing a new clinical management system designed to: address the needs of clinicians who serve chronically and acutely ill patients, achieve superior clinical outcomes, enhance customer satisfaction and maximize resources.-
Maintain Medicare Growth
Gentiva remains focused on Medicare growth, including a strong contribution from the ongoing expansion of specialty programs. -
Expand Specialty Programs
Gentiva continues to expand its specialty programs to additional Gentiva and legacy Healthfield markets. In addition to driving Medicare growth, these programs offer attractive employment opportunities for clinicians, particularly physical therapists. Grow Hospice
Gentiva is developing a significant platform for hospice expansion through new office openings in both Gentiva and legacy Healthfield markets, where certificates of need are not required, and through potential acquisitions primarily in areas where certificates of need may be necessary. Hospice is highly complementary to home healthcare, and referrals for both often come from the same sources.Improve Commercial Pricing
Gentiva is continually reviewing its commercial relationships for appropriate pricing. In cases where the Company has exited relationships not meeting its profitability requirements, excess capacity is shifted to other business.
